Kara Vernor, Director of Program and Organization Development

At North Marin Community Services Kara plays an integral role in strategic planning, capacity building, and employee engagement. She leads NMCS’ program managers in designing, articulating, and evaluating their programs in addition to managing two program areas herself — Adolescent Health & Wellness and Case Management/Community Support Services — and serving as the Grants Manager and primary Grant Writer. Prior to joining the Novato Youth Center in 2010 and North Marin Community Services in 2018, Kara was the staff consultant at the Santa Rosa-based Results Group where she worked with nonprofit and public sector organizations and multi-stakeholder collaborations on a variety of projects to strengthen their capacity, including strategic planning, change management, program evaluation, team-building, and process improvement. She has also worked in a variety of youth development programs and was a violence prevention health educator at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was awarded a BA in English and a Secondary Language Arts Teaching Credential from Humboldt State University, an MA in Organization Development from Sonoma State University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. She lives in Napa with her boyfriend, his son, and their three cats, and she is a proud feminist, social justice advocate, and believer in data.
